Just slightly before winding down for the end of 2025, we at Foundation for Shared Impact (FSI) concluded the November-December round of our widely acclaimed Board Director Training.
The three online sessions trained 30 participants, with 47% coming from the social impact sector, 25% from the private sector, and 28% of the participants being students from our Impact Lab Course and the MBA course held at The University of Hong Kong.
Our Board Director Training was born out of our understanding of the vital importance of solid board governance to the success of a business or organization, as well as the long-term sustainability and resilience of society. In the years past, we have held our regular training program open to the public as well as bespoke board directorship training programs for our corporate partners, such as HSBC’s scholars and Hub for the Future community members, and Goldman Sachs’s women executives.
Through a blend of real-life interactive discussion and self-paced study, our Board Director Training continues to receive affirmation for equipping corporate professionals, social impact leaders, purpose-driven youth, and anyone from aspiring leaders to C-suite professionals with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to become effective board members and leaders.
Fostering Confidence and Competence in Board Directorship
Among the participants of the November-December session, 87% said they felt confident in being a future board member after joining our program. Moreover, our program garnered a 4.6 rating out of 5 for being well-organized and delivered in an effective manner, providing participants with new perspectives on board directorship as well as useful and relevant information.
Said one participant: “I found the training content, interactivity, and breakout discussions really practical and helpful. The resource library of documents and links to access is incredibly helpful. I loved that it was the combination of case-solving approach, which required teamwork with more experienced participants, and reflections on the lecture. It was really interesting to analyze a real-life case story. I felt engaged, I liked the discussion, and the mix of professionals with elaborate experience added a lot of insight.”
“My biggest takeaway was a clear understanding of what a board actually does – strategic oversight, governance, and risk management – versus what management does,” said another participant, Aditi Jain. “Being a board member does not have an age requirement; it is about the mindset. I realized how crucial diverse perspectives, independent directors, and constructive challenge are in boardroom dynamics.”
Demonstrating her learning from the Board Director Training, Niru Vishwanath reflected on what it takes to become an effective board member: “Be prepared. Understand what competence you are bringing to the board, but also educate yourself on the essentials of finance, risk, and legal compliance.”
