Here in Hong Kong, COVID restrictions are expected to be lifted in phases. We certainly hope bigger in-person gatherings will be allowed to resume soon, as interactive, physical events constitute a large part of the work of many FSI partner companies.

But physical distancing measures shouldn’t stop you from donating to high-impact organizations doing the utmost they can to help the disadvantaged in society. If you are eligible for the Hong Kong government’s latest round of Consumption Voucher Scheme, please consider using it to purchase supermarket vouchers or other resources for social impact organizations and communities in need.

Shared Data Project

As a volunteer, donor, or a member of the public who wants to support the Hong Kong social impact space, have you ever struggled with the lack of information on the approximately 10,000 registered charities in Hong Kong, such as who runs them,  who funds them, and how they spend their money?

Well, you are not alone. With the intention to bring more transparency and accountability to the Hong Kong social impact space, FSI’s Shared Data Project aims to aggregate, analyze, and share data, to help ensure that the HK$12 billion annual philanthropic donations are used effectively. Creating resources such as the Charity Database, Funding Database, Nonprofit Software Discounts Database and other research endeavours, our Shared Data Project aims to become the first publicly-accessible central portal that serves charities, funders, and members of the public in Hong Kong.

Here’s how you can be part of that force for good: Become a volunteer to help us research information on our Charity Database or make a donation to support our work. If you would like to fund the additional resources we need to help us accelerate our impact, get in touch with us.

As another semester has come and gone at our Impact Lab Course, find out what our student interns have been doing on Impact Lab’s LinkedIn.  As a core program of FSI, the Impact Lab Course challenges students to critically question the world around them, and innovate for a better tomorrow. Check out our recent interviews with two Impact Lab alumni to discover how taking the course reinforced Tomáš Kessl’s belief in the value of social businesses and inspired Cheryl Kong to pursue a career in youth empowerment.

Migrasia

Did you know that 81% of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) went into debt to finance their last job abroad, and 49% of OFWs are misinformed on their legal rights?

Labor migration is currently the most common predicate action leading to human trafficking and forced labor. However, there is a lack of information on how migration intermediaries reach and recruit migrant workers at the earliest stages, how they inform prospective migrants after reaching them, and other factors that influence migrant workers’ decision-making in the pre-departure phase.

With the intention to address these information gaps, and to identify intervention points to reduce instances of human trafficking, Migrasia has conducted a research report made possible by Winrock International. Read more about the research findings here.
